The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has announced that all Sassa Gold Cards will stop working on 28 February 2025, regardless of their printed expiry date.
To continue receiving social grants without interruptions, beneficiaries must replace their Gold Cards with the new Postbank Black Cards before the deadline.
Replacement
Sassa and Postbank are urging all grant recipients to swap their old Sassa Gold Cards for Postbank Black Cards as soon as possible.
Beneficiaries who fail to do so may experience transaction issues when trying to access their grants after February 2025.
To make the process easier, Postbank has set up collection points at major retailers such as:
- Checkers
- Shoprite
- Pick n Pay
- Usave
- Boxer
There is no waiting period once you receive the Black Card—you can use it immediately at ATMs, retail stores, and any payment system that accepts bank cards.
Benefits
The Postbank Black Card offers the same benefits as the Sassa Gold Card, ensuring that beneficiaries do not lose out on any perks. These benefits include:
- One free card replacement per year
- Three free in-store withdrawals per month
- One free monthly statement over the counter
Additionally, Postbank has made it easier to find the nearest location to collect the new card using a USSD code.

This will show you the nearest retailer where you can collect your Postbank Black Card.
Requirements
To get the new Postbank Black Card, you need:
- A valid South African ID (or a temporary ID)
- No additional documents—only your ID is required
No card will be issued without a valid ID, so make sure you have your identification documents before heading to the collection point.
